Understanding Library Technology

This class is an introduction to many of the various technologies and information systems found in today's modern library. It is intended for both information technology (IT) novices and those who feel they need an IT refresher. At the conclusion of the class, students will have built a basic foundation that will enable them to manage technology in their libraries, introduce new tools to patrons, and adapt to innovations as they emerge.

Topics covered:

  • Basic Networking
  • Computer and network security issues
  • Computer workstation troubleshooting
  • Online search strategies
  • Web 2.0 and other technology trends
  • Podcasting and vodcasting
  • Making technology accessible
  • Keeping up with emerging technologies and identifying if they will have an impact on libraries

Expectations:

Students are expected to complete weekly readings and actively participate in the online discussion board, as well as turn in short assignments every week in order to successfully pass this class.

Instructor:

Jon Mark Bolthouse is the Automation Librarian for the 13 Freshman and Sophomore campuses that make up the University of Wisconsin Colleges. Previously, Jon Mark was the Systems Coordinator for Bryn Mawr, Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges in the Philadelphia area and the Systems Coordinator for the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.
