Letter of Recommendation Instructions

UW-Madison SLIS requires 3 letters of recommendation. At least two of them must be from an academic source, such as an instructor or adviser who can attest to your academic performance and your potential for succeeding in a graduate program.

Letters of recommendation are done electronically. List your references (including their email addresses) in the online application for admission to the Graduate School. A recommendation request will be sent, by email, to each of your references. The email will include your name with a link to the electronic recommendation form. The request can be sent at any time providing you meet department deadlines. You can change references or send a reminder through your application.

After you have submitted your application, you and your department will be able to view receipt of your recommendations through the online status system.

If academic reference pose a problem, you may forward a College Placement or Teacher Credential package; or you may wish to register for classes as a non-degree University Special Student and request the instructors from those courses to write letters for you. For more information contact the Student Services Coordinator, Andrea Poehling, (608) 263-2909 or by email: student-services@slis.wisc.edu.
