Eligibility: All current SLIS students are eligible to submit a single scholarly paper.

In 2004 the School, through its Diversity Committee, set forth a formal mission statement: to promote diversity within the profession through recruitment, curriculum, and programming at SLIS. This award is intended to recognize a student who's SLIS and extra-curricular activities support this mission.

The Penelope and Stephen Klein Scholarship AwardPenelope Klein earned an MA from SLIS in 1997. In thanks for her years at SLIS, she and her husband offer this scholarship to a SLIS student who is entering into the second year of study at SLIS, intends to have a career as a public librarian, and has a background in the humanities. Intention of award: To support a student entering his or her second year of study in SLIS, who has a background in the humanities, a demonstrated commitment to public librarianship, and has achieved academic excellence. Eligibility: All first year SLIS students are eligible.

Judging process: The Klein family judges the nominations. No awards shall be made in any year when, in the Klein family's judgment, no nominee merits it. The award is a $1,000 scholarship. The Beatrix Award of Stephen and Penelope KleinDONORS: Stephen and Penelope Klein (M.A. 1997) The award is $500. Named "Beatrix" from the Latin meaning "giver of happiness" in hopes that it will bring happiness to the recipient, this award was created by Penelope and Stephen Klein to support an international student to be selected by the director. Preference will be given to someone interested in public librarianship. Announcement of winner and award presentation: There is no application process for this award. The award winner will be announced in early May. If the recipient is a current student, the award will be given at the May SLIS graduation ceremony. James Krikelas Award for Innovative Use of Information TechnologyThis award was established in 1998 in honor of Emeritus Professor James Krikelas, who for several decades was a SLIS leader in teaching and using information technology in the classroom. Intention of the award: To recognize the work of a SLIS student who has presented the innovative use of information technology through a SLIS course assignment. Eligibility: All current SLIS students are eligible to submit a single project completed as a class assignment from Spring Semester 2007 to April 2008.

Application process: Students may nominate themselves, or they may be nominated by another student or a faculty or staff member. Please make the submission on CD. The CD should bear the name of the project, but not the name of the submitter. A brief paper describing the assignment and why you regard the product as innovative should accompany the project. If a paper was required as part of the project, include the paper. Any paper accompanying the CD should include a cover page with full name and contact information for the individual(s) but subsequent pages should be numbered, have the project title, but no names. Zweizig Student Leadership AwardThis award was created in memory of SLIS student Lawrence C. Zweizig, who graduated in 1990 and died soon after taking his first professional position. As a student he participated actively in the life of the School, showing a commitment to leadership and for activating a spirit of fun and good humor in those around him Intention of the award: To recognize and nurture leadership in first year SLIS master’s students, thereby helping to sustain the School’s commitment to graduating future leaders in the profession. Eligibility: All current SLIS students who have at least one semester remaining in the master’s program are eligible.

The winner will have his or her name added to the plaque hanging in the SLIS Commons. The prize will be $200 given to defray the cost of attending a professional conference or conferences while still a SLIS student Larry Jacobsen Innovations in Library Science AwardThis award was established by Larry Jacobsen, class of 1971, who wanted a way to express appreciation for a long and fruitful library career at the Lawrence Jacobsen Primate Research Center Library. He also wanted to help students like those he had supervised in the library who had struggled financially to make it through graduate library education. The intent of the award: To support a second year SLIS student who (1) needs financial assistance in completing his or her second year, (2) has a focus on academic and/or special libraries, and (3) demonstrates skills as a potential difference maker in librarianship. Eligibility: Any student completing his or her first year may be nominated provided they need financial assistance to complete the second year of the SLIS program and have a focus on academic or special libraries. In addition, a candidate must have demonstrated originality and willingness to risk, or innovativeness in his or her class or extracurricular activities, including the workplace.
Application process and procedure: Students must be nominated by a faculty member, employer, or practicum advisor. Submissions should consist of a nomination form explaining how the nominee matches the criteria for the award, documented by examples or other useful information. Judging process and procedure: The awards committee will make recommendations to the Director, to whom Mr. Jacobsen has given the responsibility of making the final decision. No awards will be given in a year when, in the committee's or director's judgment, no nominee merits it. Announcement of winner and award presentation: The award winner will be announced in early May. The award presentation takes place at the May SLIS graduation ceremony. The award will be a minimum of $4000 and it will be given to one student. The award money must be used for education-related expenses. |
