SCHOLARLY INTERESTS:
Current area(s) of research:
I am interested in interdisciplinary Anglo-Saxon and early medieval studies, particularly those which relate palaeographical and linguistic phenomena to their historical context.

Selected publications, recent and forthcoming:
I am currently working on an edition, for the British Academy, of the Anglo-Saxon charters of the Old Minster (Winchester Cathedral).
I am also compiling a catalogue of dated and datable medieval manuscripts in NW England.

I have published detailed descriptions of the palaeography of the Domesday Book, as well as translations of the Domesday text of several counties.

I have worked for over 30 years in the field of place-name research, publishing several articles. I was one of the founders, and for several years a joint editor of Nomina, the only comprehensive journal of onomastics in Britain and Ireland. I have worked on sources which record medieval English surnames, compiling a biographical register of medieval tenement-holders at Winchester and editing the 1327 Dorset lay subsidy roll.
