Current area(s) of research:
12th- and 13th-century French narrative poetry, particularly the romans and contes antiques, the anonymous romance of Partonopeus de Blois, and the romances of Hue de Rotelande.
12th- and 13th-century French historiography, specifically the verse chronicles of Wace, Jordan Fantosme and Benoit de Sainte Maure, and the Histoire des Ducs de Normandie attributed to the Anonymous of Bethune.
Editing Old French texts. I am currently Director of the AHRB-funded Partonopeus de Blois electronic edition project (please URL above).

WUN-IDENTIFIED RESEARCH COLLABORATION THEMES:
Multilingualism in the Middle Ages:
A number of the texts I study and teach at graduate level are adaptations of Latin narratives (the romans d’antiquité, Piramus et Tisbé, Narcisus et Dané) or historical texts (Wace’s Roman de Rou, Benoît’s Chronique des ducs de Normandie). My research and teaching cover various aspects of cultural and linguistic transfer, including techniques of adaptation and translation and the role of the clerc as mediator between Latin and vernacular cultures.
History of the Medieval Book:
My work on editing Old French texts (Ille et Galeron, Piramus et Tisbé, Narcisus et Dané, Partonopeus de Blois) involves a significant amount of paleography and codicology.
Medieval Chronicle Studies:
One important strand in my research focuses on twelfth-and thirteenth-century French historiography (Wace’s Roman de Rou, Jordan Fantosme’s Chronicle, Benoit de Sainte Maure’s Chronique des ducs de Normandie, and the Histoire des Ducs de Normandie attributed to the Anonymous of Bethune).

Yes, I am interested in staff exchanges with WUN partner institutions (particularly Madison), and in conducting a videoconferencing seminar or course.
I would be interested in developing on-line resources to support graduate students’ learning of medieval languages (specifically Old French), as I have 10 years’ experience of creating computer-based learning materials for undergraduate students. I might also be interested in collaborative online editions of Old French texts.
