Korea has a long history and rich cultural traditions which make it a fascinating place to study.  Korea has also played a vital role in East Asian history in interaction with China and Japan, such that a better understanding of Korea is necessary to a complete understanding of East Asia. Today, South Korea is among the top 10 trading partners of the U.S., and North Korea is considered to be among the top national security concerns for the U.S. As a result, the study of Korean language and culture has become increasingly important for American students.

The UW-Madison is one of the few universities in the nation that offers Korean language and culture study.  Although a major in Korean is not yet available, the East Asian Languages and Literature (EALL) department  and the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS) provide instruction of Korean language from beginning to advanced levels and also offer topic courses that focus on Korean culture, literature, and thoughts.
