Chinese Language and Culture Club
Teaching Certificate in Chinese

The Chinese program offers students a range of courses and activities which impart an understanding of the culture and civilization of China. With the completion of three basic years of the language, students will be prepared to handle various types of colloquial Chinese. Most of our majors pursue advanced studies in Chinese linguistics or literature, while others combine an interest in China with a degree in business, education, engineering or journalism.

Students gather once a week for an hour of informal discussion at the Chinese language table, usually from Noon to 1pm, on Friday during the semester. In addition, there are numerous cultural and social activities sponsored by the Chinese Language and Culture Club.

Placement Tests
The department requires that students who are new to our program take a placement test before enrolling in a language course beyond the first semester level.

Declaring the Major
To declare the major in Chinese, students must be of sophomore standing, and have completed the second-year Chinese course (EA 202 or equivalent). You are urged to meet with the undergraduate advisor in advance of declaring the major to discuss the requirements.

Majors are urged to begin coursework early, ideally in the freshman or sophomore year. If, however, this is not possible, summer courses at UW-Madison or elsewhere are available which speed the student's progress. Those who have Chinese credits from high school or summer sessions may enter advanced courses on the basis of placement tests.

Study Abroad in China
Students may receive residence credit for study abroad through two programs sponsored by the department: the Academic Year Abroad program at Beijing Normal University; the Academic Year Abroad program at Peking University. Please contact the Office of International Studies and Programs for details. In addition, the UW-Madison is a member institution of the Inter-University Board for Chinese Language Studies, which administers the famous Inter-University Program (Stanford Center) in Taipei and is establishing a new program at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
