Map. The computer-generated map is deliberately distorted so that the area
of each state is roughly proportional to its population. If every Informant
who was asked question H35 had answered dropped egg, the map would
show 1,002 evenly spaced dots, each representing one of the communities
selected for the DARE survey. This uniform spacing makes it much
easier to interpret the map, since any "bunching" of dots is potentially
significant, though it does take a little practice to recognize the states
in their distorted forms. The maps included in the text reflect the fieldwork
done for DARE between 1965 and 1970. See "The DARE Map and
Regional Labels" in Volume I (pp. xxiii-xxxv) for a full explanation.
