TRANSLATING IDENTITIES 1999

The aim of this workshop was to galvanize the translation community on the UW-Madison campus and define the range of translation practices (i.e. literary, technical, cultural) and ultimately examine strategies for establishing an academic Translation Studies program at UW-Madison.

Daniel Weissbort, the Director of the Iowa Translation Workshop and editor of Modern Poetry in Translation (London) delivered the keynote address entitled 'My Life as a Translator'.

UW-Madison's Cultural Translation Project was founded by Tomislav Longinovic to host academic workshops devoted to the translation broadly concieved as a process of bridging or navigation between cultures. CTP also promotes research into the issues of translation occuring between languages, literatures, cultures, communities or identities.

The first workshop, held on October 8, 1999 was devoted to 'Translating Identities'. It was a great succes as an intellectual contribution to the discussion of the translator as a figure in the realm of literary and cultural studies.

The Cultural Translation Project announces a one-day workshop devoted to 'Translating Identities' which will be held at the UW-Madison campus. The aim of the workshop is to galvanize the translation studies community on UW-Madison campus.

We will try do define the range of translation practices (i.e. literary, technical, cultural) and examine strategies for developing a cultural translation program at the UW.
