All applicants to our program must meet the University of Wisconsin Graduate School's admission requirements.

The Master of Arts Program in Afro-American Studies

Send to the Afro-American Studies Department, 4141 Helen C. White Hall, 600 N. Park St., Madison WI 53706:

- Official transcript(s) or academic records from each institution attended

- Reasons for Graduate Study if you did not include this with your online application

- A writing sample

- Three (3) letters of recommendation

- If applying, please inform the department of any home/email address changes, this is very important.

The Department of Afro-American Studies does not currently require students to take the Graduate Record Examination, although we recommend that you do so. Students who do not take the GRE are ineligible for certain types of financial aid. Admission to the department is competitive: the minimum overall GPA required is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Students with a GPA above 3.3 are especially encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to students who have completed undergraduate courses in subjects related to Afro-American history, culture, or society or who have completed an undergraduate major in one of the following fields: Afro-American Studies; a related social science discipline; the humanities.

The department admits students only once a year, in January, for the following academic year which begins in the fall. The deadline for you to be considered for the 2006-2007 academic year has passed. The department must receive all materials by January 15, 2007, if you wish to be considered for the 2007-2008 academic year. It is your responsibility to check with the department prior to January 15 re the receipt of your materials. Materials submitted to the department cannot be returned.

The Ph.D. Minor in Afro-American Studies

The department does not offer a Ph.D. at this time. Candidates for the Ph.D. in other departments may obtain a Ph.D. minor in Afro-American Studies by completing a minimum of 12 graduate credits in the department, of which only 3 may be directed study credits. Three of the 12 credits must be a seminar course. Advance approval by the candidate's departmental major advisor is required for the Ph.D. minor.
