FREEDOM RIDE JUNE 2001
Sites and Sounds of the Freedom Struggle
Summer 2001
"Freedom
Ride 2001: Sites and Sounds of the Civil Rights Struggle",
awarded Best Summer School Course from the National Association
of Summer School Sessions, combined a classroom course on the
history and culture of the Freedom Movement with a two-week
bus trip that took 35 students through the historically resonant
landscape of the American South. In addition to seeing the places
they had read about, students met with activists, musicians,
and ordinary people who had helped shape history. The course,
which attracted well over a 100 applications, was open to both
graduates and undergraduates; those selected represented disciplines
including Afro-American Studies, History, English, Spanish,
Music, Educational Policy, Communications Arts, and both Elementary
and Secondary Education. Although preliminary discussions have
been held, there are currently no plans for a second Freedom
Ride.
